Main Types of Sugar

What is Sugar: A class of carbohydrates that tastes sweet. It is a quick and easy fuel for the body. Some types of sugar are lactose, glucose, fructose, and sucrose. Everyone should know Main Types of Sugar, that’s why we have created this list for you.

Main types of Sugar
Artificial Sweetners: Low-calorie or non-caloric sweetness or sugar substitutes. 
  • Acesulfame-K: An artificial sweetener used in place of sugar which contains no carbohydrates or sugar and therefore has no effect on blood sugar levels. Known under the brand names Sunette, Sweet One, and Swiss Sweet. 
  • Advantame: An FDA-approved sugar substitute that is found in tabletop sweeteners, soft drinks, frosting, fruit juices, and more. 
  • Aspartame: An artificial sweetener with fewer calories than regular sugar. Known under the brand names Equal and NutraSweet.
  • Saccharin: An artificial sweetener that is used in place of sugar because it has no calories and does not increase blood sugar. Known under the bran names sugarTwin and Sweet’N Low. 
  • Sucralose: An artificial sweetener that is 600 times more sweeter than sugar. Known under the bran name “Splenda”.
  • Sugar Alcohols: A type of low-calorie sweetener that’s often used in “diet” and “sugar free” foods. Usually end in “-ol”, such as erythritol, sorbitol, and xylito
Natural Sugars and Substitutes 
  • Fructose: A type of sugar found in many fruits and vegetables.
  • Sorbitol: A sugar produced from fruits which the body processes slowly. In diet foods it is known as a
    “nutritive sweetener” because it has 4 calories in every gram, just like table sugar and starch.  
  • Stevia: A natural sugar substitute with no calories. Known under the brand name “Truvia”.

Sucrose: Table sugar; a form of sugar that the body must break down into a more simple form before the blood can absorb it and take it to the cells.
